Chuck – Season 1 – Episode 10 – Chuck Versus the Nemesis

Chuck Bartowski, Zachary Levi, Bryce Larkin, Matt Bomer

Season 1 – Episode 10 – Chuck Versus the Nemesis

Important Moments:

The episode opens with Bryce strapped to a table in a freaky white room. He whispers something to the nurse that sounds like “Chuck.”
<!–more–>
Later, Chuck walks in on Sarah making out with Bryce before they’ve really had a chance to discuss the kiss that happened in the previous episode. The look on his face is heartbreaking.

Back in Casey’s apartment, Bryce gets shot, again by Casey, and we find out that a group called Fulcrum is after the Intersect, and they think Bryce is the Intersect.

During the big climactic fight in the Buy More, Sarah and Bryce work together in a fight against the bad guys, and Chuck sees how well they fight as a team. This is important because it does give more of a background to the fact that they had a relationship, something that just a photo on the beach doesn’t convey.

In the last scene, Sarah is torn between Bryce and Chuck as Bryce calls her on her room phone and Chuck on her cell. We see her struggling with her decision and then the credits roll, leaving it unresolved.

Best Moments:

Chuck is sent in to interrogate Bryce and get information from him. Bryce doesn’t believe it’s really him and wants him to prove it by speaking in Klingon. Chuck is all embarrassed because Sarah and Casey are watching.

The entire Thanksgiving sequence is great, from Chuck finding out Casey killed Bryce, to Chuck telling a clueless Ellie that Anna “knows” about them and the weird interactions and muttered insults from Anna.

Bryce Larkin, Matt Bomer, Chuck

Chuck goes to get the marshmallows and – Matt Bomer. That is all.

Later, after the bad guy shows up at the Buy More and tells Chuck that he has Sarah and Bryce, Chuck says the code word “pineapple,” previously established for Black Friday shopping emergencies, creating chaos in the store, and when the word gets to Morgan, he drops the television he was holding, which falls and hits Jeff in the head, knocking him over. He doesn’t lose consciousness and instead proceeds to get knocked in the head multiple times.

When Chuck is being held at gunpoint during the Buy More fight/shootout, Bryce asks him something in Klingon. “Sorry Chuck,” and then Bryce goes with the shoot the hostage method. We then find out that he was asking Chuck if he had a bulletproof vest on. It’s a great moment and another one where we see that Bryce really does care about Chuck.

Matt Bomer walking out in slow motion. And again, that is all.

Casey keeps a bonsai tree.

Coolest Action Sequences/Chuck Accidentally Saves the Day:

It’s not technically an action sequence, but the scene when Bryce and Sarah have a standoff in Casey’s apartment is shot in a comedic manner, with the camera following them as they circle the room and each other, Chuck staying behind Sarah the whole time she is walking in a circle. Then Casey comes in after they realize Bryce is telling the truth and shoots him right in the chest, sending him flying across the room as Chuck faints.

The scene where Sarah and Bryce fight as a team is shot in such a way that it has a dance quality to it.

Weirdest Moment:

Everything involving Anna in this episode is weird. I know it’s meant to be funny, but her outbursts, such as when she says that Ellie can have Morgan after he eats the potatoes, is weird.

I don’t know what category to put this in, but when Morgan recognizes Bryce, he gives him the weirdest look that is kind of hilarious, but when he tells Bryce about, basically himself, the look on Bryce’s face at realizing how Chuck sees (at least until recently, though there does still seem to be residual emotional damage) him is heartbreaking.

Notable Guest Star:

As any readers of the recaps of the previous episodes know, I’m a big Matt Bomer fan, and he’s back in one of my favorite episodes.

Awesome Soundtrack Moment:

“No One’s Gonna Love You More Than I Do” by Band of Horses

Best Lines:

“The tryptophan wears off and it’s time for the liquor to kick in.” – Jeff, in response to what happens after Thanksgiving

“They saved you, did they? Could you be any more cryptic?” – Chuck

“Pass.” – Casey, when it’s his turn to say what he’s thankful for

“I’m thankful that Bryce Larson is dead, and is not currently in my bedroom making out with my new girlfriend.” – Chuck
“Wow buddy, that was really dark.” – Morgan
“And specific.” – Awesome

“No guns at Thanksgiving.” – Chuck

“Honey, no more family dinners, okay?” – Ellie

“I got one friend in this world. You got a home and a store full of them.” – Bryce

“That stings a little bit.” – Chuck, after being shot

White Collar – Season 1 – Episode 4 – Flip of the Coin

Neal Caffrey, Matt Bomer, Lauren Cruz, White Collar

White Collar – Season 1 – Episode 4 – Flip of the Coin

Important Moments:

Elizabeth shows up at the FBI because her friend Dana’s husband, John Mitchell, is wanted for stealing gold coins. Peter looks up the file and it looks really bad. Neal advises Elizabeth that her friend should tell her husband to turn himself in. Elizabeth says that’s exactly what he’s doing, turning him in to Peter.

John tells Peter that a guy from the State Department, Ames, asked him to bring things into the country. They find John Mitchell’s fingerprints on the gold, and they are all left-handed prints. Neal realizes the prints are from Mitchell having drinks with Ames.

Elizabeth asks Dana about her husband and it turns out there was a female reporter embedded in his unit. Ames forgot his hat at the bar, which could explain hair fibers found on the gold.

Peter and Neal go to see the reporter, Alisha Teagen. Peter makes it a point of having security inform Teagan that the FBI was there and asks Neal, who was left in the lobby, to observe her response to the news.

Neal comes in with tons of coffee and pastries, looking like a busy assistant. To get past security, he tells the guy his card is in his pocket, and since his hands are full, turns his back pocket toward the guard, so he can grab it. The guard tells him it’s fine and waves him through.

When Peter talks to Alisha, she says that Mitchell wasn’t very memorable. While he is interviewing her, Neal is copying documents, illegally. After the interview, Neal tells Peter that he saw her lock something in a drawer. He assures Peter that he didn’t steal it, but he photocopies it. He calls Mozzie to run it down.

After Elizabeth asks Peter to give them some girl time, Peter shows up at Neal’s apartment with wine (for Neal) and beer (for him).

Peter asks Mozzie about what he found at the pawn shop.

Neal talks to Tegan under cover as a guy with a story about a cover-up in Iraq. He basically accuses her on camera. She then confesses to Peter back at the FBI, but says she didn’t set Mitchell up, that Ames did. Peter then tells her she’s going to participate in a set-up.

The FBI gives Neal a Mercedes to use to pose as a buyer. They tell him to make it work. He gets Mozzie and they pose as FBI agents that need to confiscate a limo that was involved in a crime. During the set-up, Alisha starts to lose it, resulting in Ames pulling a gun on Neal. It ends up in a gun chase, with Peter hiding as Ames is shooting at him.

Meanwhile, Mozzie is sitting in the limo, drinking Champagne and listening to opera. He sees Ames, puts it in drive, and runs Ames over, telling Peter, “I was never here.”

The Kate Saga:

Neal is still staring at the wine bottle. He has figured out that it’s a map.

Peter and Mozzie start mocking Neal’s Kate search, while Neal is sitting right there in front of them.

Best Quotes:

“Is it the crying?” – Neal

“I thought some female intuition would be helpful.” – Peter
“Dana started crying, didn’t she?” – Neal
“I didn’t even do anything. I had no idea what went wrong.” – Peter

“I thought you’d be taller.” – Peter
“Me too.” – Mozzie

“Moz, you lived in a storage unit.” – Neal

“Did you draw on my face?” – Mozzie

“We gave him a Mercedes.” – Peter
“I guess he made it work.” – Jones

“You’re with the FBI.” – Ames
“Technically, I’m just a consultant, she’s with the FBI.” – Neal

“Looks like we have a stand-off.” – Neal
“No, we don’t. Shoot him, then I’ll have you on murder, too.” – Cruz

Chuck – Season 1 – Episode 7 – Chuck Versus the Alma Mater

Chuck Bartowski, Zachary Levi, Bryce Larkin, Matt Bomer

Chuck – Season 1 – Episode 7 – Chuck Versus the Alma Mater

Important Moments:

The episode opens with some technology that explains a little bit about how the intersect works, explaining how Chuck could end up with it as a result of an e-mail. In the same scene, we find out that a Stanford professor has some sort of secret information, and he made a mistake with it, resulting in some tough looking guy showing up at his office. We find out later that the professor was a former professor of Chuck’s from when he was attending Stanford, and was the professor that kicked him out of school.

Chuck flashes on himself, and find out he is in the Intersect. Casey and Sarah have no idea why he is in it.

Chuck has a flashback to the moment when he was accused of not only cheating on the exam, but also selling copies of the tests from an anonymous tip from a student. (Bryce! So mean!) The moment is kind of heartbreaking. However, it also leads Chuck to realize what the numbers from the professor mean.
<!–more–>

Coolest Action Sequences/Chuck Accidentally Saves the Day:

This time Chuck saves the day on purpose, so major credit for that, as he thinks quickly and calls all the CIA agents that are on a cd list to help Sarah and Casey, who have been surrounded in a classroom at Stanford.

Weirdest Moment:

Chuck and Morgan are in the break room and Tang, their boss, walks in. He tells Morgan that he’s soft like pudding, then pokes Morgan’s stomach and sucks on his finger as if he just dipped it in pudding. Um, weird, and also – disgusting.

Notable Guest Star:

Matt Bomer is back as Bryce Larson, first showing up as Chuck flashes back to the day he left Stanford, where Bryce is incredibly cold to him.

Chuck has another flashback of him and Bryce playing rubber dart tag (?) in the library, and it’s a fun scene, with undertones hinting at what Bryce did when he tricks Chuck into losing.

Best Moments:

While it’s also an important moment, the scene when Chuck watches the meeting between Bryce and the professor, and Chuck finds out the Bryce framed him for cheating to save him is an amazing scene. Chuck finds out that his best friend didn’t actually betray him, after all those years of feeling so bad about it, and he can’t even talk to Bryce about it now. (Or so he thinks…)

The show ends with Chuck picking the photo of him and Bryce out of the dumpster and having a flashback to a happier memory of his friendship with Bryce – the day they met at Stanford, when Bryce (Matt Bomer at his most likeable best) shared his enthusiasm for video games and introduced Chuck to Jill, who would become his girlfriend.

Awesome Soundtrack Moment:

Chuck is looking through some of his old Stanford stuff to “Don’t Look Back In Anger” by Oasis. The episode later bookends with the same song playing as Chuck flashes back to a memory of Bryce that now has a more positive viewpoint.

Analysis:

This is the first episode where both Chuck and the audience see that so much of what Chuck has based his beliefs and ideology on is untrue. His nemesis is really his friend, and later much of what he knows about the Intersect and his parents go through similar transformations. These moments showcase that Chuck is not a bitter person and doesn’t hold a grudge. He’s very understanding and quick to forgive.

Best Lines:

“It says here the crossbow is his weapon of choice.” – Sarah
“Oh what, slingshot too ineffective?” – Chuck

“He could have an accident. I’m just saying, I know a guy, very reasonable.” – Anna

“I know, I know, stay in the car.” – Chuck

“I swear, this school has it in for me.” – Chuck

White Collar – Season 1 – Episode 3 – Book of Hours

Neal Caffrey, Matt Bomer, Maria, White Collar

White Collar – Season 1 – Episode 3 – Book of Hours

Important Moments:

Agent Jones and Cruz are watching a bookmaker named Borelli from the van, when he walks over to the van and asks the FBI to help them recover a bible. Borelli says the bible is from medieval Naples.

Mozzie tells Neal that the bible is famous for its healing powers.

Neal has the idea to look for a true believer. They go to the church and find out that a homeless man, Steve, with a sick dog had stayed in the church. When they ask him about the bible, he openly admits to taking it. He needed it for his dog, Lucy, who is sick. It turns out that Borelli’s nephew hired Steve to take the bible.

When Borelli’s nephew turns up dead, the detective on the case, Ruiz, doesn’t want Neal involved so they get taken off the case. Peter tells Neal pointedly that he can’t do anything. Neal then says he’s a bit chilly and asks to borrow Peter’s FBI jacket.

Mozzie and Neal turn up a woman named Maria Fiametta, who is an art historian.

Peter suggests that Neal convince Maria that he’s pliable and might be willing to steal the bible. Elizabeth suggests just asking her out. <!–more–>

Neal does and everything goes according to plan, sort of. She joins with him to steal the bible, but she knows they’ve bugged her, and she double crosses Neal. He’s holding the bible in front of him so that if she shoots him she has to shoot the bible. She does anyway. The bible stops the bullet and Neal’s fine.

Peter asks for the bible back. Neal says he already gave it to “some FBI guy.” He gave it to Mozzie to bring to Steve to use to help Lucy. When Borelli shows up, he offers to take Lucy to his vet.

Kate Saga:

Neal is just staring at the wine bottle. It’s a little pathetic, which Mozzie tells him.

Notable Guest Stars:

Kirk Acevedo from Fringe and 12 Monkeys guest stars as Detective Ruiz.

Best Quotes:

“He thinks I’m swabbing toilets. I figure we’ve got about 10 minutes until he gets curious.” – Mozzie
“Why, is that the standard toilet swabbing time?” – Neal

White Collar – Season 1 – Episode 2 – Threads

Neal Caffrey, Matt Bomer, Tara, White Collar

White Collar – Season 1 – Episode 2 – Threads

Important Moments:

Peter is complaining about how difficult it is to get a cab as Neal gives their cab to some models. Neal points out it’s fashion week, so Peter may as well embrace it. Peter then gets a cab and more models show up. Neal holds out a $100 bill and a cab stops for them.

When they get to the FBI office, Neal finds out they are going after a criminal known as the Ghost. After talking to a witness, Tara, Neal comes up with a plan to throw a party to draw the Ghost out. They get party supplies from the police raid warehouse.

Mozzie gives Neal a venue to use.

At the party, Neal meets a guy named Dmitri, and when Tara hears him speaking Hebrew, she thinks he might be involved. They catch him but Tara confirms that they caught the wrong guy. <!–more–>

The Kate Saga:

Neal tells Mozzie that the man with the ring didn’t find what he was looking for in San Diego. It turns out that Neal told different people that his stash was hidden in different cities. He told Kate it was in San Diego. Neal defends her, saying that it’s not her fault, the man is forcing her. He thinks she may have warned him when she visited him in prison. He wants to figure out how to get the security tape from Peter. Mozzie suggests he try asking.

Peter and Neal go undercover, with Peter posing as Neal’s bodyguard while Neal poses as a buyer.

While outside Dmitri’s hotel, they get a report about an argument on the 50th floor. Jones realizes Dmitri is on the 50th floor and they go, but they’re too late. Dmitri is dead. He was left on the floor with a dress sticking out of his mouth.

Peter says they deal with a lot of knock offs and that some of the designers are making very small security strips, built right into the dresses. Basically, it could be like a small hard drive.

Neal gets a call from Ghovat, wanting to pay him $5 million dollars for the dress, which he thinks Neal bought for his fiancé.

Meanwhile, Tara has been kidnapped while being escorted home by her police detail. Ghovat calls Neal and reveals that he knows the FBI really has the dress. He wants Peter to deliver it in Central Park.

Ghovat gives Peter only one minute to get the dress to the fountain in Central Park, with the dress. When he gets there, Ghovat lets Tara go, but tells Burke that Tara’s belt is an explosive device. The device is activated by his phone. Neal comes up with the idea of continuously calling him to jam his phone so he can’t use it to activate the bomb.

When Neal gets there, Ghovat pulls a gun on him, and then Agent Cruz takes him down from behind.

Chuck – Season 1 – Episode 1 – Pilot

Zachary Levi, Chuck Bartowski, Yvonne Strahovski, Sarah Walker, Adam Baldwin, John Casey

Chuck – Season 1 – Episode 1 – Pilot

This is a rewatch of Chuck from the beginning, with the hindsight of having seen it all the way through, which means spoilers may be included at any time, as sometimes that can be part of the fun of a rewatch – you already know what will happen.
<!–more–>

Character Introductions:

We meet Chuck and Morgan as they are climbing out of the first floor window (from a first floor room) to escape Chuck’s birthday party.

Ellie, Chuck’s older sister, catches them and makes Chuck go back to the party.

Awesome, Ellie’s boyfriend, who we find out is called Captain Awesome as a nickname because everything he does is awesome.

Sarah, who we first meet as a customer coming into the Buy More, where Chuck and Morgan work, to get her broken phone fixed.

Casey, who we first see shooting Bryce Larson in a parking lot. This brings us to…

Matt Bomer, Bryce Larkin, Chuck

Notable Guest Star:

While this probably wouldn’t normally be such a prominent category, and at the time the pilot aired, he wasn’t notable, I’m a huge Matt Bomer fan, and Bryce Larson is a vital character in the Chuck mythology. We first see him in a cool action sequence where we get to see Matt Bomer do some cool physical action sequences that we aren’t likely to see on White Collar. So we see Matt and his blue eyes, get shot by Casey, but not before he has the chance to send an e-mail to Chuck, starting off the series. A few minutes later we learn that Bryce was a CIA agent.

Best Moments:

Chuck stages a ballerina recital for a little girl after her father accidentally didn’t put any tape in the camera, telling her, “Real ballerinas are tall.”

A ninja burglar breaks into Chuck’s home and beats Chuck and Morgan up. We later learn that the burglar is Sarah.

Sarah straps knives to her ankle as one of her first pieces of wardrobe, then later dances with Chuck on their “date” where she takes out all the NSA guys without Chuck even noticing.

Anyway You Want It” by Journey is Chuck’s ringtone for Morgan.

Important Moments:

Chuck opens the e-mail from Bryce Larson and gets the Intersect, knocking him onto the floor until the morning.

Chuck saves the day by infecting the computer the bomb is attached to with the Irene Demova virus.

Sarah defends Chuck from the government right from the very beginning and then later talks to him on the beach to reassure him when he’s freaking out about his whole situation.

Sarah looks at the pictures on her iPhone where we learn that she was involved with Bryce Larkin. We also get to enjoy a nice shirtless picture of Matt Bomer.

Chuck gets told to train the new guy, and he goes out to do that, where the new guy turns out to be Casey. At that moment, Chuck gets flashes of Sarah shooting someone.

Best Lines:

“Can I tell you a secret, but you can’t tell any of the other girls? Real ballerinas are tall.” – Chuck

“I’m not sure I’m able to receive calls, cause I never got one from you.” – Sarah

“Aces, Charles. You’re aces.” – Ellie

“I did it. I defused a real bomb! What if I was wrong?” – Chuck

“Don’t puke on the C-4.” – Casey

“Don’t freak out.” – Sarah
