Notable Plot Moments:
Dean has moved Lisa and Ben to a new home, and is keeping them inside, trying to be casual, “forgetting” they were going out to lunch by ordering a pizza.
Meanwhile, Sam and Grandpa Campbell are investigating a murder and kidnapped baby in Michigan. Grandpa Campbell says “baby stew” too many times.
Ben gets into Dean’s trunk, and Dean yells at him, demonstrating his immense need for therapy, telling Ben he will never shoot a gun, while Ben clearly wants to be just like Dean. He’s obviously just mad because he wants to protect Ben from being anything like him. When Lisa comes to talk to Dean about it, it becomes clear that his issue is that he feels responsible for keeping Lisa and Ben safe during every second of the day, an impossible task.
Sam and Dean go to the grocery store to buy supplies for the baby. The demon shows up as a nurse behind them in line as a ruse to steal the baby, leading to an awkward chase with Dean attacking a nurse as the entire store looks on.
Sam goes to interview the father of one of the missing babies, and it turns out that the shape shifter is the father. Dean, who was back in the motel enjoying the magic fingers, already figured this out as the baby had turned black and thrown goo all over the wall. The shifter shows up and they fight. Sam shows up during the fight and shoots the shifter.
Sam suggests they bring the baby to Grandpa Campbell. Dean doesn’t like the idea but has no better suggestions. They get there and there is some testosterone and weirdness between Dean and the Campbells. Grandpa Campbell then says they will raise the baby shapeshifter, which Dean thinks is absolutely ridiculous.
The shapeshifter then shows up, dressed as Grandpa Campbell. It kills one of the guys and finds Sam and Dean locked in the basement. It’s ridiculously strong and takes the baby from Dean.
Who is Grandpa Campbell talking to??
How awesome is Lisa? Dean knows what he wants to do, even if he’s torn about it, and she talks him through and lets him go while still giving him the family he wants. He gets to leave on a good note, and he’s always welcome back.
…And we end with a commercial for a classic Chevy Impala.
Dean tells Sam that he feels like he has a chance to do something different with Ben than the way they are up. Sam points out that what he’s doing right then is exactly what their father used to do and say.
It’s interesting to see the dynamic between Sam and Dean change while it also stays the same. Since Dean’s been out of the hunting game for so long, Sam is in charge in the way that Dean usually is. However, Sam is acting sketchy, which doesn’t escape Dean’s notice, which has them reverting to their dynamic from Sam’s demon blood days, where Dean is questioning sam’s motives about almost everything he does, and definitely demonstrating some suspicion and distrust.
The entire scene in the grocery store with the baby.
After Sam goes to talk to the father of one of the babies, Dean puts his finger in his whisky and gives it to the baby.
State of the Week:
“I’m pretty sure there’s some paste or gel you’re supposed to put on their butts.” – Dean
“They might get upset when it turns Asian.” – Dean
