The Song Remains the Same
Notable Plot Moments:
Anna comes to Dean in a dream and tells her she needs his help. Castiel shows up instead of Dean and Anna tells him that Sam has to die because he’s Lucifer’s vessel. Castiel says they’ll find another way and threatens to kill her if she tries to hurt Sam.
Anna then goes back in time to 1973 to kill the Winchesters before Sam is born. Castiel takes Sam and Dean back in time with him to stop her.
They decide to use the fact that Mary will remember Dean as a hunter and ring the doorbell. When John comes to the door, Dean says they’re Mary’s cousins.
Sam just keeps staring at his parents in a way that makes John ask him multiple times if he’s okay.
Anna calls John and poses as his boss, getting him to come to the mechanic shop under the guise of discussing his job. Mary, Sam, and Dean all head to the mechanic shop and Dean gets knocked out by Anna. Mary fights her, managing to stab her with a crowbar, but Anna just pulls it out. Meanwhile, Sam has put the symbol that makes them disappear on the wall and does that to save Mary. However, John saw the entire thing. He has questions.
They drive back to Mary’s parents house, and John gets very stubborn about helping. Mary demands answers from Dean and he reluctantly gives them to her. Then he tells her what happens to her so she can stay out of Sam’s room the night she died and not be killed. Sam then says the demon will find her anyway and that she has to leave John so they are never born. She tells them it’s too late because she’s already pregnant.
The angels make all the protection seals disappear and then Anna and Uriel attack them. Uriel stabs Sam and Anna throws John through the window. John walks back in, but he’s actually Michael and he kills Anna. He then saves Sam and sends both of them back to the present, but not before erasing John and Mary’s memories so Mary won’t remember Dean’s warning.
This episode is taking a view that destiny is predetermined, and as Michael explains to Dean, nothing they do will change the outcome, which is reflected in Dean’s failure to warn his mother and save her.
Sam has a real therapy moment with John, where he tells him about his dad, and that he understands why he raised them the way he did, and that he forgives him and loves him.
