Benedict Cumberbatch will act as narrator for a new documentary about Naples after the Nazi occupation of World War II.
The documentary will be based on Naples ’44, a book by Norman Lewis. The film will be written and directed by Francesco Patierno. The documentary will be a combination of archive and feature film footage from famous films set in the city.
Lewis is widely considered one of the best English-language travel writers. Naples ’44 is one of his most significant works.
The book reveals the story of Naples after the war, in which working class people and nobles lived side-by-side in the impoverished city. Lewis describes in humanistic detail the effects of the war on everyday life and the resilience and struggles of everyday culture.
