The episode opens with a man answering the door and freaking out at a small, sort of homeless looking girl, who then kills him offscreen.
Sam is asleep in the backseat of the car, while Dean is looking for another case, even though Sam points out they just finished a case two hours ago. Dean finds a case in Nebraska that sounds like a ghost.
Sam and Dean explore the house, and from the camera work, we can tell someone is watching them. They find a really creepy doll head on the floor in the closet, the only item in the house.
As they are looking around, new owners drive up. After convincing the family to stay in a motel, they interview the dead man’s cleaning woman, who tells them that his wife died in childbirth and his daughter, Rebecca, hung herself in the attic 20 years later.
Meanwhile, the family has realized that Sam and Dean were not county inspectors and are back with their stuff. The teenage daughter, Kate, looks up and sees the ghost in the window. Then later her younger brother, Danny, is playing video games when the closet opens and a baseball rolls out. He seems to make friends.
Sam and Dean are watching the house from outside. Inside, the ghost has written on the wall, and the parents blame Danny. He tells them the girl in the walls did it because she hates grown ups, but they don’t believe him.
Sam and Dean show up after they hear Kate scream when she touches the ghost, thinking it was her dog. The ghost then kills the dog and slashes all of their tires so they can’t leave. Dean ushers them all back inside and makes a salt line. They show the pictures of the wife and daughter to Kate, and she identifies the ghost as the daughter. Danny then says that she is also the girl in the wall. Sam goes to see if there is anything in the attic that her spirit could be attached to since the housecleaner said she was cremated.
The ghost shows up and walks right into the circle, where Dean realizes that she isn’t a ghost.
He then finds the entrance to her tunnels in the wall. She kills Ted, the brother.
Sam finds Rebecca’s journal, and it turns out that the girl in the walls is Rebecca’s daughter. The father was Rebecca’s father, and not wanting anyone to know he raped his daughter, he hid the daughter/granddaughter in the walls.
Dean finds Danny, who tells them to hurry because “he’s coming back”. They ask who and Danny says her brother. Meanwhile, outside in the shed, someone is breaking the walls down and the two women are freaking out.
Back in the house, they pull Danny out of the basement, but one of the crazy people has attacked Dean, and he’s dropped his gun. As they are fighting, Dean shines his flashlight in the man’s eyes and is able to get the gun and shoot him.
In the shed, the father knocks on the door after some horrible sounds, and he killed the sister.
Story & Character Analysis:
The father, Brian, asks Dean why he cares so much. In the episode wrap up by the car, Dean reveals that he enjoyed torturing people. Granted, it isn’t in a sadistic way, but because he was so angry and had been so tortured himself, that doing it to others became a release. He doesn’t find that an acceptable excuse, though, and that’s why he feels so compelled to save everyone now.
When Sam and Dean are trying to figure out what to do about the girl, Dean gets a little touchy when Sam uses the expression that the girl’s “life was hell”.
Right after Kate comes down to tell her parents about the ghost, Danny mentions the girl in the wall again, and then Sam and Dean burst through the front door and Sam tells them they have a ghost.
Dean tells everyone to remain calm when the ghost shows up and reassures them that she can’t walk into the circle…as she walks into the circle.
Dean isn’t hungry when Sam gets a burger. Sam immediately asks what is wrong.
