Metamorphosis

Plot Summary:
Jensen Ackles, Dean Winchester, Jared Padalecki, Sam Winchester, Supernatural, Ruby
Sammy lied. Dean goes the the address that Castiel gave him and sees Sam uses his psychic powers to send a demon back to hell. When Sam turns around and sees that Ruby is with him, it doesn’t go well.

A guy in Missouri is ravenously hungry and then breaking in strange ways. So this is basically a really disgusting episode.

Meanwhile, in the car on the way to Missouri, Dean is telling Sam about meeting their parents when they were younger. Sam expresses the fact that he’s upset that their entire family was murdered because Yellow-Eyes wanted to drip demon blood in his mouth. Dean hadn’t mentioned that fact, so it’s yet another thing Sam “should have” told Dean, yet didn’t.

The brothers are watching the really hungry guy from their car. He is still really hungry and the raw meat looks really good. Yum. (Or, you know, ew!) Travis, a hunter that led the brothers to the case, tells them they are looking at a regard, which is a man that turns into a flesh-eating monster.

Travis tells them they have to kill Jack, the regard. Sam does research and finds stories about people that never ate human flesh so they never really turned. Instead, they just ate a lot of raw meat. Travis dismisses those stories as fairy tales and tells Sam he’s never seen a regard not eat human flesh.

Meanwhile, Jack is starting to lose control and almost attacks his wife. The brothers pay him a visit and tell him what’s happening, but he freaks out and yells at them to leave. The brothers follow him and he almost attacks a young woman. When Jack returns home, he finds his wife tied up and Travis knocks him out and ties him up, too. It turns out that his wife, Michelle, is pregnant, so Travis plans to kill them both since he won’t be around in 30 years to do the same thing all over again. Jack escapes from the chair and feeds off of Travis. Really gross. Thanks, Supernatural.

After witnessing that horrific site, Michelle freaks out and leaves in her car. The brothers show up shortly after and find what is left of Travis. Suddenly, Jack comes out of nowhere and attacks them. Sam wakes up locked in a closet and Dean is unconscious on a table. Sam tries to talk Jack down from eating Dean while he picks the lock on the closet. He manages to get out before Jack starts eating Dean, who wakes up in time to see Sam burn Jack.

In the car, Dean assures Sam that he did the right thing. Sam then tells Dean that he’s done with using his psychic powers.

Character & Story Analysis:

When Dean confronts Sam about what he’s been doing, he is tearing up. Dean still feels like he failed, because even though he went to Hell to save Sam, he still sort of lost him in a way.
Jensen Ackles, Dean Winchester, Supernatural
Sam is really against killing Jack unless it’s an absolute last resort. As Dean blatantly points out, Jack’s situation has quite a few parallels to Sam’s situation. Jack inherited the gene for becoming a regard from his father, a gene that makes him want to eat human flesh. Sam has demon blood inside him that may make him do who knows what. This carries over as it turns out that Dean is right and that Jack can’t be saved. Sam sees so much of himself in the situation that he then decides to stop using his powers.
Jensen Ackles, Dean Winchester, Jared Padalecki, Sam Winchester, Supernatural
When Sam tells Dean about that decision, the camera cuts to Sam and his reflection in the window, which can be interpreted in two ways. It gives the appearance of Sam talking to himself, so it might mean that Sam is trying to convince himself that stopping is the right thing and the way to prevent himself from going dark. The other possibility is that his reflection is representative of his dark side, and even though Sam says he wants t stop, the darkness inside him doesn’t care, kind of like his evil twin. It’s a really clever bit of camera work that is very open to interpretation.

Episode MVP:

Sam, for doing what needs to be done under extenuating circumstances, especially with how much he can relate to Jack.

Notable Guest Star:

Genevieve Padalecki is back as Ruby.

State of the Week:

Missouri

Best Lines:

“If I didn’t know you, I would hunt you.” – Dean

“Then tell me, if it’s so terrific, then why did you lie about it?” – Dean

“He had a hell of a case of the munchies, topped off with a burger that he forgot to cook.” – Dean

“I’ve got demon blood in me, Dean! This disease pumping through my veins, and I can’t ever rip it out or scrub it clean! I’m a whole new level of freak! I’m just trying to take this curse and make something good out of it, because I have to.” – Sam

“Your appetites reaching hungry, hungry hippo levels.” – Dean

“You’ve got this dark pit inside of you, I know. Believe me, I know, but that doesn’t mean you have to fall into it. You don’t have to be a monster.” – Sam

This episode is so gross and yet so good, plus it kinda makes me want to slap Dean. (Not that he didn’t have a point.) And it’s also the last Kim Manners-directed episode before he passed away.
