World Water Day is coming up on March 22, and especially considering the water crisis occurring here in the United States, right in California, it is important to look at what each of us as an individual can do to help the water crisis.
Diseases from unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war, according to charity:water. Children are especially vulnerable, as their bodies aren’t strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery and other illnesses. Ninety precent of the 30,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are in children under five years old. The WHO reports that over 3.6% of the global disease burden can be prevented simply by improving water supply, sanitation, and hygiene.
In addition to addressing these needs through volunteering (the web site has volunteer opportunities in NYC for those interested in signing up) and practicing water conservation, there is also a fashionable way to support World Water Day. Join some of your favorite celebrities in wearing a bracelet from Lokai, a brand that sells bracelets that support global charities, including charity: water. This year they have launched a limited edition blue bracelet and they are donating $3 for every blue bracelet sold before March 22 to help bring clean drinking water to 10,000 people in Ethiopia.
The bracelets are infused with elements from the highest and lowest points on earth. Loki tells you to, “Wear lokai to remember that life sees many altering moments – it’s how you process them that matters most. Wear it as a reminder that your path is yours alone or give lokai to someone who might do well to remember the value of his or her own personal journey. No matter the setback, success or surprise, enjoy your story. Wherever your journey takes you, find your balance.”
