Chuck – Season 4 – Episode 8
Chuck Versus the Fear of Death
This episode picks up with Chuck being reamed out by General Beckman for his loss of the Intersect.
Important Moments/Plot Summary:
Casey is assigned to guard Chuck. General Beckman believes the Intersect may have been surpressed, rather than removed. Chuck meets with a lot of scientists who try to determine what surpressed the Intersect so they can restore it. The testing goes on for 31 days, after which, when Chuck stands, he just falls over.
Sarah returns from her travels and reports no success. Volkoff and Frost appear to have gone underground.
Agent Rye, who shows up to help Chuck retrieve the Intersect, decides that Chuck should go on a mission alone. Chuck gets assigned to retrieve a stone from an auction and bring it back. The stone is used for money laundering and other bad things. The man after it is known as The Belgian.
Agent Rye tells Chuck that if things go south, they’re trapped. It should produce enough adrenaline to lift a car, hopefully restoring the Intersect.
Sarah is spending the entire time Chuck is gone worrying about him.
Agent Rye takes Chuck into a security vault where the security measure is for the temperature to drop over a hundred degrees. When Chuck still doesn’t flash, Agent Rye uses the code to disarm the security, but when the vaults open, there are multiple identical diamonds.
Agent Rye decides Chuck’s fear must be connected to a deeper anxiety connected to his relationship with Sarah.
They retrieve the diamond, which contains a microdot with information about C.I.A. assets. General Beckman sends Sarah to help Chuck with the mission for the diamond.
Chuck and Agent Rye go after the Belgian without Sarah. Casey and Morgan find out that Chuck is on the microdot. The Belgian knows that Chuck is the Intersect. Sarah calls Chuck but Agent Rye takes his phone and hangs up on her before she can tell him.
Coolest Action Sequences/Chuck Accidentally Saves the Day:
Chuck walks into Castle and is assaulted by ninjas. The new specialist is Jim Rye, who plans to “get physical” which seems to involve putting Chuck in dangerous situations to restore the Intersect.
Chuck and Agent Rye get into a fight with the Belgian and his people on a ski lift. In the process, Chuck falls out and is hanging onto the edge. Agent Rye just won’t give it up when Chuck still won’t flash, and then he gets shot from behind by the Belgian and falls out of the ski lift car. The Belgian lifts Chuck back up, but then calls Sarah to tell her he’s taking Chuck.
Sarah tells Chuck that he doesn’t need the Intersect to do great things.
Casey has lunch with Alex and she gets him to tell her the truth about why he’s acting so strange. He tells her he’s mentally preparing in case he gets sent back to Iraq or Afghanistan. He says he got soft and made friends in Burbank.
After Chuck is kidnapped, Sarah disobeys orders and starts packing to go after Chuck. Casey and Morgan show up and tell her they’ll go together.
Funniest/Most Awkward Moments:
Lester wonders about the fact that all of the new employees have been named Greta.
Morgan tells Chuck that Casey went to help Alex move furniture and just stood staring at her fish tank for an hour muttering something about an itchy trigger finger.
Jim comes into their bedroom dressed as a ninja and puts knives across Chuck’s throat. Chuck and Sarah both demand to know what he’s doing in their bedroom.
As Chuck is bidding for the diamond, a man sticks a gun in his back and tells him not to bid again. Chuck thinks it’s Agent Rye and ignores him. Then he later turns around and sees it’s actually not Agent Rye.
Jeff is cleaning his nails with a filed toothbrush, then using it to brush his teeth.
Chuck and Sarah get into an argument about Chuck taking too much risk by handling the mission on his own. In the course of the argument, she says he isn’t a spy.
This episode is only two stars because Agent Rye is too ridiculous. His method goes past the point of believability and he has far too much screen time over the other characters, especially Casey, who is relegated to a storyline about Jeff and Lester stalking Greta. The next episode is one of my favorites, though…
