Yvonne Strahovski Featured In GQ Australia

Yvonne Strahovski, ChuckYvonne Strahovski was on the cover of the August 2015 issue of GQ Australia. Here are the photos and the complete interview (click on any pictures for the full sized images):
Yvonne Strahovski, Chuck
Yvonne Stryker. It’s the kind of name that would have a porn star blushing. It’s also the stage name suggested to Australian actress Yvonne Strahovski on landing in LA a few years back. She was an attractive, leggy and wide-eyed newcomer; she wasn’t, however, an easily moulded starlet. “Look, at the end of the day it was my call,” she tells GQ. “And I understood the reasoning behind it – the spelling of my name is a mouthful of letters.” That original Polish grammatical jumble reads: Strzechowski. “So I have the same last name – but now it’s spelt phonetically, so people know how to pronounce it.” Regardless, hers is a name on the move. While she left these shores in 2007 with little more than some commercial work (razors, Pepsi, A4 paper) and face time opposite Rachael Taylor in failed Seven drama Headland, Strahovski was soon co-starring in US series Chuck. Created by The OC’s Josh Schwartz, the goofy spy spoof provided a prime-time entrance to American TV. “I’m forever grateful for that job and I made a name for myself over there with that show, but it was hard because of the hours. It would have been nice to have received a warning about how involved it is to shoot a network show… yeah, it’s very involved.” That’s not a complaint, far from it – the 32-year-old’s simply a straight shooter. She’s also a self-professed “nerd” – one who embraced education, including enforced Polish lessons every Saturday. “It’s my first language and we speak it at home. I was a goody two shoes – a straight-A girl, and I took pride in my studies.” Strahovski’s easy in front of the camera – even with a crowd of grommets, forced from the water at a closed Maroubra Beach due to a heaving southern swell. Posing in a variety of swimsuits, it’s hard to imagine her as a “tomboy” who once loathed this side of the actor’s coin. “I remember the first time they threw me on a red carpet – I had no idea how to walk in heels, let alone apply lipstick. I went to drama school [University of Western Sydney] thinking it was about acting – suddenly you get a show and it’s about interviews and photo shoots. I used to feel like a dick in front of the camera, but I know how tomake it work and I feel comfortable in these scenarios now.”
Back to that name – one most Australians may not know but certainly should. In the three years since Chuck’s file was closed by NBC, Strahovski’s obvious smarts, talent and angular good looks have seen her straddle stage (Broadway’s Golden Boy), film (The Guilt Trip, I, Frankenstein) and more TV – romantically entangled with Dexter’s eponymous lead, as well as Louis CK in his acerbic effort Louis and out front, matching it with Kiefer Sutherland, in last year’s 24 reboot – Live Another Day. “I’ll be honest, there was some trepidation around doing 24 because I was playing another CIA agent,” she says. “I knew the shows would be different, but both [Chuck’s] Sarah Walker and [24’s] Kate Morgan are similiar kick arse women – so I put a lot of thought into how I’d make them different.” The screech of an imposing black cockatoo breaks her train of though. Strahovski’s genuinely happy to be home, albeit briefly, to spend time with her parents (who’ve joined her on the GQ set) and the stretch of Sydney sand she underused as a youngster. Especially given she’s now a keen surfer. “I grew up afraid of the water and would never go in further than my thighs.” That changed a few years ago in Malibu, dragged onto a board by a friend at a party. “I like running around and I like to try new things – and the second I felt what it was like to stand up on a surfboard, I was hooked.”

Happily single, her threefin, seven-foot set-up is the only ‘man’ she needs right now. “Seriously, since surfing, I’ve found some form of zen – all is good with the world.” Another Hawaii trip is on the cards (“I caught my biggest ever waves at Turtle Bay”), so too the release of feature film Manhattan Nocturne opposite Adrien Brody and a period US TV drama, Astronaut Wives Club (starring another Aussie and GQ favourite, Sam Reid. Beyond that, it’s life lived simply, in the water and on the sand with “rescue muffin” Chazzy (that’s her dog, by the way). “I’d love to plan and plot but you can’t in this business, it doesn’t work that way.”
