Born Under a Bad Sign – Season 2 – Episode 14
The episode opens with Dean on the phone with Ellen. Apparently, Sam has gone missing and Dean hasn’t been able to get in touch with him.
Dean gets a call from Sam and then he immediately goes to find him. Sam is sitting in a room with blood on his hands and clothes. Sam doesn’t think it’s his blood, but he doesn’t remember anything, not even how he got there.
Dean asks around the motel and no one noticed anything odd. Sam starts worrying that this is what their Dad warned them about. Dean tells Sam they have to treat this like any other job and retrace Sam’s steps.
They go to a row of garage storage units, which Sam thinks are familiar, though he doesn’t remember it. He has a key in his pocket that opens the second garage. The garage contains a car and there’s a knife covered in blood in the back seat. Dean also finds cigarettes. There’s a receipt from a gas station so they go there. As soon as they walk in the cashier tells Sam to get out. He says that yesterday Sam walked in drunk and started chugging liquor. Then he hit the cashier over the head with the bottle. The cashier also says Sam was smoking like a chimney and didn’t pay for the alcohol or cigarettes. Then he tells Dean that Sam went north.
Sam has Dean turn down a road where they find an abandoned looking house. The glass from the window is broken. They find a dead body inside and Sam thinks he must have killed the man. Sam opens a closet that is filled with guns. They think he was a hunter. There is a camera on the ceiling, which they watch to see what happened.
After learning that Sam did kill the man, Dean wants Sam to help him cover their tracks, but Sam is just sitting there, feeling guilty. Dean tells him that other hunters will come looking for him, and then looking for his killer, so they have to get out of there.
After being knocked unconscious, Dean wakes up after the motel manager knocks on the door to tell him it’s past checkout. Dean finds out that Sam is in Duluth, Minnesota.
After learning that Sam is possessed, the demon tells Dean that the whole thing was a test to see if Dean could be pushed far enough to kill Sam.
Sam goes to Bobby next. (Oh no! Bobby, be careful!)
When Sam wakes up after Bobby knocks him out, he is tied to a chair under a devil’s knot. Bobby starts an exorcism. Dean is pissed at the demon. Sam/The Demon starts laughing, telling Dean he doesn’t care about a master plan, which is the reason that Dean thought the demon was possessing Sam. Sam/The Demon starts chanting and things start blowing around the room. Bobby realizes the demon has put a binding link on Sam’s arm to connect him to Sam, locking him in Sam’s body. The shaking breaks the ceiling, also breaking the devil’s knot, freeing Sam/The Demon.
After freeing himself, Sam/The Demon starts beating the crap out of Dean. He tells him how horrible hell is, and he’s angry that the Winchesters sent him back there. Dean realizes it’s Meg, or the demon who possessed Meg at any rate. Sam/The Demon tells Dean that he’s worthless and his father and brother would have been better off without him. Then Bobby comes up behind him and burns the binding symbol with a fire poker, exorcising the demon.
Bobby asks the brothers if they’ve ever heard of Steve Wendell, the dead hunter. Dean says no, and Bobby says to keep it that way. He clearly knows Sam/The Demon was responsible. He then gives both brothers charms to prevent possession.
The video shows Sam fighting with the dead guy and then slitting his throat, proving that he did kill the hunter.
After Dean refuses to kill Sam, Sam knocks Dean out, seemingly possessed.
Sam is in a bar where Jo works. He’s acting a bit weird, possibly creepy. Jo wants to know why he’s there. Sam is trying to make an apology regarding what happened with Jo’s father. In the middle of the conversation, Sam starts laughing and is clearly not himself. He calls Jo out on her crush on Dean, saying that Dean only thinks of her as a schoolgirl or little sister. Then Sam hits on her and kind of looks like a serial killer. Jo tells him to leave and then Sam attacks her. He seems like he’s going to rape her and then smashes her head onto the counter, knocking her unconscious.
Jo wakes up tied to a pole. She knows it’s not Sam in some way. Sam wants to know exactly what Ellen told her about her father’s death. He has a knife. Sam tells Jo a different story about how her father died than the one she heard from her mother.
Dean bursts in with a gun drawn. Sam begs him to shoot him again. Instead, Dean throws holy water on Sam and then his eyes go black and his face gets weird, and we see it was a demon the whole time. Sam/The Demon then jumps out of the window and Dean follow him. They end up on a dock where Sam/The Demon shoots Dean, who then falls in the water.
Sam and Dean argue about whether Sam murdered the man. Even with all the evidence, Dean is insistent that there is an explanation, citing possibilities like shape-shifters.
The scene when Sam asks Dean to kill him, and Dean says he can’t is amazing. (Jensen Ackles delivery of that line was perfect and so heartbreaking.)
After pulling Dean out of the water, Dean is drinking hard liquor straight as Jo takes out the bullet and stitches him up. Jo asks about demons, wanting to know if they ever tell the truth. Dean says they might if it will mess with your head, and Jo doesn’t tell him why she asked.
Bobby hands Sam/The Demon a beer and when he drinks it, Sam/The Demon suddenly spits out the beer. It has holy water in it. Bobby saw it coming and knocks Sam/The Demon unconscious.
After being exorcised, Sam asked Dean if he missed anything. Dean punches him in the face. They both are groaning in pain.
Sam tells Dean that he’s been having moments of rage. Sam thinks the yellow-eyed demon might be controlling him. Sam brings up Dean’s promise that he would kill him if it came to this. He hands Dean a gun.
In the last scene, Sam is mad that Dean didn’t kill him at some point while he is possessed. Dean says he is determined to save him.
Dean calls the cell phone company to try to locate Sam, telling the operator that Sam snuck out to go to a Justin Timberlake concert. There is a brief pause, and then Dean says, “Yes, Justin is quite the triple threat.”
The look Dean gives Jo after she asked if Sam was possessed was priceless. It just said it all.
Sam is brushing the knife against Jo’s hair, the way a person would with their hand to be comforting. Probably not so comforting with a knife.
Impersonation of the Week:

“They’ll fend off possession. That demon’s still out there. This’ll stop it from getting back up in you.” – Bobby
