Season 2 Episode 12
This episode picks up on the shape-shifter plot from earlier in the season and last season. The show opens with live news coverage of a bank robbery in progress. Then a man is coming out with an employee as his hostage. We then see the robber is Dean.
It’s one day earlier and Sam and Dean are talking to employees in a jewelry store about a murder. A woman named Helena shot another employee in the face. According to the woman Dean interviews, Franny, Helena killed herself.
Sam fills Dean in on the case, telling him that the robber, Juan, was someone that would never be expected to rob a bank, and who then killed himself after the robbery. They visit a witness, Ronald, who said that Juan never robbed the bank, but the police won’t listen to him and think that he’s crazy. Ronald’s house is covered in posters about aliens and UFOs. Ronald says he let Juan into the bank, but it wasn’t really him, just something that looked exactly like him. Ronald thinks it was a man droid and shows them the security tape, which shows that the robber had yellow eyes. The brothers realize it’s a shape-shifting demon.
By impersonating security officers, the brothers find the shape-shifter at the next bank. He’s the bank manager. Before they can do anything, Ronald shows up with a massive rifle telling everyone it’s not a robbery, but making everyone get on the floor.
After talking Ronald down a little and locking everyone in the bank vault, Dean and Ronald find the skin of the shape-shifter, which means it no longer looks like the bank manager and can be anyone. Dean grabs a silver mail opener and tells Ronald silver is the only thing they’ve found that hurts them.
Meanwhile, SWAT and snipers have all set up outside the bank. They cut the power to the bank and without the camera, there won’t be any way to tell who the shape-shifter is.
Dean and Ronald tell Sam that they don’t know who the shifter is. Sam points out that Dean is wanted by the cops and if they come in, all of them will be arrested.
A man is having heart trouble and another hostage is telling Ronald and Sam he needs help.
Meanwhile, as Dean is wandering the bank halls looking for the shifter, he sees a board in the ceiling is loose. A man falls out of the ceiling, his throat slit. It’s the same man that is trying to get the man with heart trouble out of the building. He is the shifter.
A federal agent, Henriksen, calls into the bank and speaks to Dean. He tells him that he knows that he and Sam are both there. The agent knows about everything they have done, the misunderstandings as murders, etc. Henriksen then says some less than complementary things about John, pissing Dean off.
SWAT and the FBI walk into the bank and one of the SWAT team members sees the dead shifter and tells the others that he just walked her out of the bank. Henriksen wants them to comb the bank for Sam and Dean but another agent says that won’t be necessary, as two agents have been tied up in a closet with their uniforms stolen.
After Ronald takes the bank hostage, Dean tells Ronald that the shifter is the bank manager. He convinces Ronald to take him with him to find the shifter before he turns into someone else.
The shifter runs away after Dean finds him. Ronald then chases after him. He runs into the light, where a sniper shoots him from behind.
We then meet up with the opening scene, where the police observe that one of the hostages, that being Dean, seems to have taken over the situation. Sam then calls Dean to tell him that the shifter has shed it’s skin again so it could once again be anybody.
Sam then finds the body of one of the female bank employees in a closet, so she’s the new shifter. Her name is Sherri and Dean tells her that they’re going to let her go as an act of good faith. They get her into the hallway and show her the body and she freaks out and faints. Before Dean stabs her, Sam wonders about the advantage of the plan for the shifter. It turns out the shifter is the dead body and she gets up and attacks Dean and is then able to get away. Dean catches up with the shifter and her skin starts coming off again. It grosses Dean out and gives him the shifter the opportunity to get the upper hand, though Dean still manages to stab it. A SWAT team member walks up behind him right then.
The reactions of Sam and Dean to meeting Ronald and seeing all of his conspiracy theory stuff is highly entertaining.
Before they go out to talk to Ronald, Dean tells Sam to let him to the talking because he doesn’t think Ronald likes Sam very much. When they are talking to him, Ronald tells Sam to shut up, saying, “I don’t like you.” Dean then gives Sam an ‘I told you so’ look.
The major eye roll from Sam when the woman behind him asks who Dean is and Sam says it’s his brother and she says, “He is so brave.”
