Season 2 – Episode 9 – Croatoan
This episode furthers along the mystery of what John told Dean about Sam, though really only by leaving the audience with more questions. The episode opens with a slow motion shot of Dean walking into a room with a gun, looking like he is about to shoot someone.
The room Dean walked into has a guy who is promising that, “It’s not in me.” We don’t yet know what he’s talking about, but Dean aims the gun at him and says he has no choice. As Dean fires, the camera cuts to Sam, who was dreaming the entire thing and has fallen onto the floor while he was sleeping. Dean walks into the motel room to find Sam freaked out.
Sam saw a picture of Crater Lake and is looking for a town called River Grove. When they find it in Oregon, Sam recognizes a man with a fishing pole from his vision.
As they are walking back to the car, Sam sees the word ‘CROATOAN’ carved into a tree. Sam says it’s reminiscent of Roanoke, a colony in Virginia that mysteriously disappeared and the only thing left behind was the word ‘CROATOAN.’
They decide to contact Bobby or Ellen for help, but discover they have no cell service. The pay phone is out of order, too.
The brothers go to the Tanner’s house to look for Dwayne Tanner, the teenager from Sam’s vision. They find the son, Jake and Mr. Tanner home. They act really weird.
After the brothers chase off Jake and shoot Mr. Tanner, they bring Mrs. Tanner to the hospital. The brothers suspect they might be dealing with mass possession.
Dean goes to the next town to get help and leaves Sam in the hospital to keep everyone safe. As Dean is driving, he comes upon a car with what looks like a murdered family, even a baby, though all the bodies are gone. When Dean gets to the edge of town, he is greeted with a bunch of the townspeople blocking the road, holding guns. Among them is Jake Tanner.
The doctor tells Sam that she found what looks like sulfur in Mr. Tanner’s blood. Sam thinks it’s a demonic virus. He found a note in John’s journal where their father thought Croatoan might have been the name of a demon.
The doctor says she can’t cure it because she doesn’t even know what ‘it’ is. Dean shoots Mrs. Tanner.
The nurse drops the blood sample on the floor and it shatters.
The man with the gun that Dean met says they have to go somewhere and Sam agrees. The man with the gun asks if they have explosives and Sam says they can make them. There is someone outside and it’s Dwayne Tanner. They see that Dwayne is bleeding and the doctor says that based on her study of the blood work, there is no way to determine if people are infected until they turn.
After everyone leaves Sam and Dean because Sam is infected, they go outside and there is no one there. The entire town is gone. The doctor then examines Sam’s blood and it’s clean. He’s not going to turn. The weird thing is that Mr. Tanner’s blood no longer shows any signs of sulfur either. Sam will be fine, though there is no explanation as to why.
The penultimate scene is of Dwayne in the car with the man with the gun. He asks him to pull over and says that he needs to make a call. It turns out that he’s a demon and he cuts the other man’s throat and talks to a demon the same way that Meg did during the first season.
Sam tells Dean that his vision is happening and Dean says it’s a tough job but he is generally not upset about it. Sam says that he’s acting like one of the infected people and Dean locks him in the room.
After refusing to leave Sam alone, Dean admits that he’s just tired of living, tired of hunting. He is about to say more when he is interrupted by a knock on the door.
When everything is okay again, Sam wants to know what Dean was talking about when he said he was tired of the job. In the conversation, Dean reveals to Sam that their father told him something about Sam right before he died, but that he promised he wouldn’t tell Sam.
Dean is about to shoot the teenage boy from Sam’s vision, but can’t do it, changing the vision. Later, the doctor says that it’s been four hours and he doesn’t appear to be infected.
After Sam is infected, everyone, Sam included, wants to shoot him. Dean refuses and tells everyone else to leave, locking the door to the room with him and Sam inside. Dean will not leave Sam behind, under any circumstances.
After the creepy interaction, the brothers walk around the side of the Tanners’ house and look in the window. They see the mother tied to a chair and gagged. The father and brother appear to be doing some sort of ritual to her. Sam and Dean bust in and Mr. Tanner goes to attack them and Dean shoots him. Jake Tanner gets away through the window.
As Dean goes to leave town, the crazy people with guns want him to get out of the car. The guy is really creepy about it, which Dean notices. He throws it in reverse and drives away, though the crazy man hangs on for an impressive amount of time. Dean spins the car and drives back towards town.
Meanwhile, the doctor wants to take a blood sample from Mrs. Tanner to make sure her blood is normal. Mrs. Tanner suddenly goes nuts and grabs a knife and charges Sam. He hits her over the head with a fire extinguisher.
The nurse, Abby, gets Sam alone and attacks him. She cuts him across the chest and then cuts her hand and mixes their blood, infecting Sam.
As Dean is driving back towards town, a man is suddenly in front of his car with a gun. He makes Dean get out of the car, though Dean has a gun as well and they end up in a standoff. The man with the gun is concerned that Dean is one of ‘them.’ When Dean says he isn’t, the man says, “You could be lying,” to which Dean replies, “So could you.”
