Episode 12 – Chuck Versus the American Hero
“I love you, Sarah Walker, always have.” – Chuck
This is the first of a few of the best episodes of the series. It opens with Chuck in D.C. on his way to meet with General Beckman. He is a bit bumbling…
Meanwhile, a man is examining the body of Perry, the mole Casey shot as part of Chuck’s red test in the previous episode. The man takes something out of Perry’s mouth and reports that the “Package is intact.”
Chuck reaches the waiting room for General Beckman, and it’s like the waiting room of a doctor’s office. When Chuck gets into the office, General Beckman presents Chuck with his assignment in Rome, which looks like a really nice villa. Also, it comes with accouterments. I want a job that comes with accouterments. There’s also a yearly stipend. Chuck is not as excited about this as I am. Chuck kind of tries to back out, “Hand wringing and second guessing” as General Beckman calls it. She decides to give him a week to think about it and assemble his team. This increases Chuck’s enthusiasm as he thinks he can bring Sarah as part of his team.
Ellie tells Awesome that she got a sabbatical and they can do Doctors Without Borders in Africa, though he seems oddly under excited.
Chuck has decided that he has to win Sarah back. Awesome shows up and asks if Chuck is still leaving because she won’t go to Africa if Chuck is still in Echo Park and working in Burbank. Awesome then says they have to help him get Sarah back, which is when Casey pops in and gets in on the plan as well.
Chuck goes to Castle to talk to Sarah, who is really giving him the cold shoulder. He asks her to be part of his team. Sarah says no and when Chuck doesn’t understand why they can’t be together since he passed his spy test, she says that’s the reason why. Since she thinks she saw him kill the mole, she thinks that Chuck isn’t the same person so she’s going to D.C. with Shaw. He asks her to trust him that it’s more complicated than it looks, but she says she doesn’t trust him.
Chuck and Team Charah are watching Sarah and Shaw on their date from Jeff’s van. Simultaneously, some other, official looking guys are also watching the date. The plan they come up with is for Chuck to go into the restaurant and talk to Sarah. Shaw gets a phone call from someone claiming to be an operative of the Ring, threatening the restaurant patrons. The camera pans to Morgan, talking into a device. Shaw catches Morgan and Ring agents attack them. As Shaw is running back to the restaurant concerned about Sarah a Ring agent pulls a gun on him and tells him that the director wants to meet with him face to face.
The next morning, Ellie has just bailed Casey, Awesome and Morgan out of jail and she’s mad. She demands answers and Awesome and Morgan are ready to tell the truth, but Casey jumps in and stops them.
Shaw tells General Beckman that the Ring wanted to take him to their director. Sarah wonders why they would want him alive and Shaw brushes it off, saying it doesn’t matter. General Beckman agrees to Shaw’s plan to act as a double agent. Sarah is upset about it, saying he’s going to get himself killed.
After a speech from Ellie, Chuck goes back to Castle to talk to Sarah. Unfortunately,he walks in right when she’s kissing Shaw. Shaw then swallows a tracking device so they know where to direct an air strike. Chuck then locks Sarah in a cell so he can go save Shaw.
Shaw meets a Ring agent and the camera pans back to show Jeff and Lester watching. The agents remove the tracking device that Shaw swallowed using some weird magnetic contraption. It’s kinda gross.
Sarah uses Morse code to contact Casey about her situation. Meanwhile, Chuck has found the tracking device left behind by Shaw. He then gets a phone call from Lester, who tells Chuck that they are following Shaw.
General Beckman gets a report that Agent Shaw (who is actually Chuck carrying Shaw’s tracking device) has gone subterranean and that an air strike team has been deployed with bunker busters. The military official asks about Agent Shaw, who would be killed and General Beckman just says, “He is a true American hero.” Unfortunately, Chuck is there too, though General Beckman doesn’t know that.
Shaw meets with the Ring director, where he sees Sarah’s red test and learns that she’s the one who killed his wife. (I guess I remembered that wrong. For some reason, I thought he always knew that Sarah killed her).
Shaw wakes up in the hospital, all crazed, angry person.
After the whole air strike situation is resolved, Sarah is back in her hotel room, packing, though for Mexico or D.C., we don’t yet know.
After we know it’s for Mexico, Sarah is about to leave to meet Chuck when Shaw shows up and tells Sarah there’s an emergency. She wants to call Chuck first, but Shaw tells her to do it from the car because there’s no time.
Chuck, waiting for Sarah, gets a text to report to Castle immediately, where General Beckman plays the footage of Sarah’s red test to Chuck. General Beckman is concerned that Sarah is with Shaw, which she is. Sarah is trying to call Chuck, but can’t get a signal.
Coolest Action Sequences/Chuck Accidentally Saves the Day:
Chuck is about to tell Sarah that he loves her when Awesome tackles Shaw, sending them both through the window where they land on the table Chuck and Sarah are sitting at.
Chuck goes into the building Shaw and the Ring agents are in and sees nothing but a Dr. Jibb machine. He flashes and it turns into the scariest elevator ever, going way down into the basement.
The Ring agents find Chuck and have him at gunpoint when one of the ones he has knocked out drops a noise bomb, deafening both the Ring agent and Chuck, though Chuck stills knocks the Ring agent out. He then goes into the weird black room where Shaw met the Ring and finds Shaw unconscious on the floor. Meanwhile, Sarah has arrived just as the air strike planes have. The entire building explodes, but then she sees Chuck walking out, carrying Shaw over his shoulder. Sarah cries with relief and I choose to believe it was because Chuck was okay.
Chuck pours his heart out to Sarah.
Ellie’s speech to Chuck:
“You didn’t go far enough, Chuck. Sarah is special, I know it, you know it. If you love her, if she’s the one, than you don’t stop, you don’t quit, you never go too far.”
Chuck takes Ellie’s advice and locks Sarah in Castle to go after Shaw and bring him back because he knows how much Sarah cares about him. (Does she really, though? Can you really go from loving one person to another and back again in the space of about three episodes?)
Chuck’s speech to Sarah:
“I’m just gonna be blunt and honest. I love you. One more time just because it feels really nice to say, I love you. I feel like I’ve been bottling this up forever. I love you.”
Chuck then tells Sarah that she was right in Prague and he wants to leave the spy life and be with her. He asks her to meet him at Union Station at 7p.m. and they can go to Mexico. I love that he adds in that he’d like to see the Eiffel Tower ‘at some point, if that’s at all possible.’ He tells her not to answer now because he doesn’t want to have to convince her, he just wants her to show up. Then Chuck kisses Sarah. He goes to pack and she has tears in her eyes.
Casey goes to Sarah’s hotel room and tells her that he was the one who killed the mole.
Sarah has finished packing and is going to meet Chuck at Union Station. She turns around and throws her gun on the bed because she won’t need it anymore.
Casey is determined to get out of Burbank now that he’s a civilian and wants to be on Chuck’s team in Rome. Thus begins Project Help Chuck Get Sarah Back.
Chuck leaves the Buy More after telling Casey and Morgan that he’s going to quit being a spy. When he walks out to the parking lot later, Casey, Awesome and Morgan freak him out by pulling up suddenly in Jeff’s van and piling out in matching red beanies. I guess it’s their ‘spy’ outfit.
Jeff’s observations about Shaw’s meeting with the Ring agent includes him referring to his recording as ‘Stalker’s Log,’ and stating that Shaw is meeting with another man for a possible sexual encounter.
Most Awkward Visit Ever:
Casey in Sarah’s hotel room was just so awkward, but in the best way, because he would never go there on a social call.
Love Triangle Crap:
Sarah tells Chuck that Shaw is turning himself into the Ring, sacrificing himself for them. She is practically in tears and it’s so completely annoying. A plot point that I never understood is why Chuck killing someone would affect Sarah’s feelings so strongly, as she has no problem with the fact that Shaw has killed people. Makes no sense!
