Woman Wednesday – Ming-Na Wen

Ming-Na Wen is one of a small number of Asian actors on television who also plays a strong, kick-ass character, and strong female characters still are sorely lacking in Hollywood.  She played a doctor on E.R. for more than five seasons and now plays intimidating Agent Melinda May on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Why She Is Awesome:

Ming-Na Wen is awesome just for being a strong female character on a well-written show that can take care of herself.  However, Wen also works with several non-profits, such as Love Is Louder, for which she designed a canvas print, as well as CureDuchenne and the HollyRod Foundation.  Wen is the 2014 recipient of an OCA Pioneer Award.

Love Is Louder is a foundation to support anyone feeling mistreated, misunderstood or alone coming together to bring awareness to the message that love and support are louder than any internal or external voice that brings us down.

CureDuchenne is an organization that works to bring awareness and improve treatments for Duchenne, a muscular disease in children.

HollyRod Foundation works to provide care to those living with autism and Parkinson’s disease.  The foundation aims to improve the quality of life for those individuals and their families.

Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) is a national organization dedicated to advocacy and the advancement of Asian Pacific Americans in social, political and economies arenas.
