Yvonne Strahovski has signed on for a new role in the ABC drama series The Astronauts Wives Club, according to Deadline. The new casting gives Strahovski the chance to re-unite with her Chuck boss, series co-creator Josh Schwartz, who is also the co-executive producer of The Astronaut Wives Club. The new series is being written by Stephanie Savage (Gossip Girl), who is also the co-executive producer along with Schwartz.
The series follows a group of women supporting their husbands during the 1960s space race. It is based on a 2013 bestselling book by Lily Koppel that follows the lives of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo mission crews’ wives. Strahovski will play Rene Carpenter, an independent, confidant woman who realizes a calling to politics, civil rights and women’s issues during a tumultuous time for those issues, causing conflict with some of the other astronauts wives.
The show will film during the next two months. The series is set to run for a shorter season of 10 episodes as is becoming more popular on network TV, following the format of the cable networks. The cast also includes JoAnna Garcia Swisher (Once Upon a Time), Odette Annable (House), Kenneth Mitchell (Jericho) and Desmond Harrington, who starred with Strahovski on Dexter, as well as a role as Jack Bass on Gossip Girl with Savage.
Strahovski most recently starred in 24: Live Another Day alongside Keifer Sutherland. Prior to that, Strahovski was on Dexter and starred on the NBC series Chuck as spy Sarah Walker for five years. After production on the series wraps, Strahovski will star opposite Adrian Brody in the upcoming film Manhattan Nocturne.
The series is tentatively scheduled to air midway through the current television season, though no premiere date has been set.
