Chuck Recap Season 2 Episode 4

This is another favorite episode, with the high school reunion scene as a highlight, with a surprisingly entertaining performance by Nicole Richie as Sarah’s former high school classmate, Heather Chandler. This episode also gives some backstory on Sarah, though in some ways it also just raises more questions.

The episode opens with a flashback to 1998, when Sarah arrives home from school to find ATF agents outside of her house. She runs and digs up a box of money that was left in the woods for her by her Dad. This does not bode well.

Chuck Versus the Cougars

Important Moments:

Chuck finds out that Sarah is from San Diego and her real name is Jenny Burton (even though we all know it turns out it she really isn’t and it really isn’t).

Chuck flashes on Mark Ratner, one of Sarah’s former high school classmates, who shows up at the Orange Orange with Heather Chandler, who is his wife, causing a mission that requires them to go out to dinner with Heather and Mark, much to Sarah’s chagrin.

Chuck tries to find out more about Sarah in her hotel room before they leave for the dinner and Sarah goes kind of psycho, telling Chuck off and stabbing a photograph of her and Chuck with a pencil. It makes you wonder what the big deal is…

Later, at the dinner with Heather and Mark, Chuck finds Mark in a compromising situation in the bathroom with some creepy looking guys. He flashes on the guys threatening Mark. They are not good guys.

After the dinner, when it turns out that they will have to go to Sarah’s high school reunion because that’s where Mark is having a meet with the bad guys regarding weapons, Sarah has flashbacks to her days in high school after her father was arrested. The flashbacks are interspersed with Sarah hitting a punching bag. Hard.

Chuck finds out that Sarah’s father is in prison when Duffy mentions it to Sarah at the reunion.

It turns out that Heather Chandler is a bad guy. She tells Russian mobsters that Chuck is CIA and that they should kill both Chuck and Sarah.

The episode ends with Sarah having a flashback to when she found the box of money from her father in the woods. It turns out that Jenny Burton isn’t her real name, but just one in a long line of false identities. She is recruited into the CIA by Director Graham right then. He is the one that gave her the name Sarah Walker.

Best Moments:

When Mark is telling Chuck how he’s just a nerd and can’t believe that such a beautiful girl would fall in love with him, Chuck is looking at Sarah thinking about the obvious parallels, and he tells Mark, “Sometimes the nerd gets the girl.”

When Heather says that it’s ridiculous to think a girl like her would fall in love with a nerd like Mark, Sarah says, “You’d be surprised.”

Sarah offers to answer one question about her past after everything is over, and Chuck declines because he doesn’t need to know who she was. He knows who she is.

Nerd Moment:

When Chuck sees the computer in Castle in the beginning of the episode, he gets really excited. Really overly excited.

Notable Guest Stars:

Nicole Richie guest stars as Heather Chandler, a girl from Sarah’s high school class, who is married to Mark Ratner. Heather was a cheerleader and Mark was a nerd who got shoved into lockers.

Ben Savage guest stars at Mark Ratner, another student from Sarah’s high school class, the aforementioned nerd who got shoved into lockers.

Worst Wig:

For some reason, television shows and movies always seem to think putting a bad wig on someone makes them look younger, and while Chuck is in no way unique in this regard, it does use the bad wig to try to make Sarah a teenager.

Funniest Moments:

Casey calls Chuck “Mad Dog” and tells Mark he got a nasty looking scar on his arm because he parked in Mad Dog’s spot one time. Mark immediately offers to help them get the information regarding the meet with the bad guys, which turns out to be set for the high school reunion.

Chuck says, “Wow!” when he sees Sarah’s high school photo. At Sarah’s look, he says, “It’s not that bad.”

One of the boys who was mean to Sarah in high school, Duffy, comes over to Sarah and says he and his friends decided that Sarah was the hottest girl in the room and he wanted to come over and find out “the name of the girl I’ll be waking up next to tomorrow.” Chuck’s facial expression is priceless. Chuck then flashes on Duffy, and it turns out that he is part of the Russian mob.

Sarah gets crowned the queen of the high school reunion right after her big fight with Heather. She walks out with her make-up running, a cut lip, wet hair and no shoes.

Coolest Action Sequences/Chuck Accidentally Saves the Day:

Casey comes into the bathroom at the restaurant and takes out the bad guys. Mark is hiding in the bathroom stall the whole time, and when he comes out, he thinks Chuck took them out.

Duffy, a jock from Sarah’s high school class who was mean to her, is hitting on Sarah again in the parking lot at the reunion. He grabs her ass, so she slaps him. Then he keeps going, so she takes him down, knocking him out in the process.

Chuck finds out who the bad guys are at the reunion, and he gets on stage, pretending to be one of the students from the school. He talks about the different “special cougars” using a spotlight to indicate who the bad guys are to Sarah and Casey.

When they realize Heather is involved, Sarah goes after her and they have a crazy fight in the bathroom. The fight utilizes the shower, and is nothing like a typical “girl fight.” It is a really cool fight scene.

Awesome Soundtrack Moment:

A reverse awesome soundtrack moment occurs when Chuck and Sarah arrive at Sarah’s reunion to the sounds of “Backstreets Back” by the Backstreet Boys. That song is followed by a series of songs that remind you just how bad some of the music of the late 90’s was.

Best Lines:

“Come on! Of all the semi-tart Asian influenced frozen yogurt shops in all the towns in all the world, you walked into hers!” – Chuck

“Don’t kill the messenger. It’s not the kids fault you went to high school with a treasonous scumbag.” – Casey

“I’m going to go pull the van around so we can stow these guys. Be right back.” – Casey

“The only difference between high school and a high school reunion is that you don’t get suspended for being drunk.” – Chuck

“I never should have stolen the bomber plans. I should have gone right to you guys, but they threatened my wife. I wasn’t thinking straight. See, I’m just a guy who likes math, you know, and somehow I got a beautiful girl like that to fall in love with me. I have to pinch myself sometimes. It’s like I’m dreaming.” – Mark

“Great, now I know he’s a perv. I just don’t know if he’s the perp.” – Casey
“Yeah, sorry, I’m just working out some childhood issues.” – Sarah

“That’s why love is for suckers.” – Casey
“Yeah, have you seen Sarah anywhere?” – Chuck
“Sucker.” – Casey
