As this is a rewatch, I’m using the dvd (I can’t find it on any of the streaming services, annoying!) so this first recap is of the extended version of the pilot. Also, because it’s a rewatch, there will be spoilers! Hopefully, I can get through the show before the movie comes out.
Veronica Mars. We meet her, or her trademark voiceover anyway, outside the seedy Camelot Motel, on the wrong side of town, as she espouses against marriage. Cut to Veronica’s camera on the seat, then her drinking coffee, before we see her and realize she’s only a high school student.
Weevil rolls up with his motorcycle gang. Veronica rolls down the window, and he says, “Car trouble, miss?” Cut to opening credits.
Wallace makes his first appearance duct taped to the flagpole – naked, with “snich” written across his chest, misspelling and all. Poor Wallace.
Clemmons is up next, as we meet his during the “random” locker searches when they search Veronica’s locker, empty except for a picture of Clemmons with a heart around it.
Duncan Kane, “he used to be my boyfriend.” I may be alone in this, but that is about as exciting as Duncan ever really gets as a character, except for his yet to come rage outbursts, but that’s for later episodes.
“And let’s not forget Logan Echolls,” who we meet as he sits on Duncan’s lap, making sexual innuendos in Veronica’s direction to mock her for her relationship to Duncan. How far we will go, from the hatred for him in this episode…
Cliff, a local lawyer who makes no apologies for the types of low class clients he represents, who shows up at Mars Investigations for help with a case about a stripper.
Keith Mars, Veronica’s dad, who we meet at work, right after he took a meeting with Celeste Kane, Duncan’s mother.
Corney the stoner makes his first appearance, making a bong for Veronica.
Wallace has what is probably the best introduction of a best friend on television, as Veronica pulls out a pocketknife to cut him down from the flagpole. In a continuation of this moment, when Wallace sits down at Veronica’s lunch table, only for her to respond, “Did I say you could sit here?”
Every time Veronica and Weevil talk, there is underlying sexual innuendo that is both amusing and really kind of clever. In the pilot, it makes you wonder if Weevil will be a possible love interest for Veronica.
The interaction between Veronica and Keith when he returns from catching the bail jumper.
A bong is found in Logan’s locker, placed there by Veronica as a way to kill two birds with one stone. Logan was chosen for the sheer fun of the revenge, something Veronica and Wallace take great delight in watching, and as a way to get a smoking bong into the sheriff’s evidence locker, part of Veronica’s plan to get the bikers to leave Wallace alone and get the police to leave the bikers alone, helping Cliff out with his case all in one big swoop. Okay, so maybe it was more like killing four birds with one bong.
The look from Sheriff Lamb to Veronica to Cliff after the video of one of the police officers in Cliff’s case is shown during the trial for Weevil’s gang members.
Weevil apologizes for taping Wallace to the flagpole and then asks for the tape back. Wallace says no and him and Veronica walk away.
Most Important Moments:
Duncan broke up with Veronica for no apparent reason and with no warning.
Veronica tells Weevil to leave Wallace alone, demonstrating the first of many instances where Veronica will be someone that Weevil will back down from and that he has respect for her, in his own way, regardless of the sexual innuendo.
It’s interesting to note on rewatch that we don’t find out that Lily Kane was Veronica’s best friend until almost 15 minutes into the episode, at the same time that we find out Lily had a big secret and was murdered.
In Logan’s first scene with Veronica (with actual interaction), he is crying as he confronts her about what her Dad is doing to the Kane family after the video from Lily’s crime scene is leaked online.
Abel Koontz is arrested for Lily’s murder. Shoes and a backpack were found on his boat, discovered by Sheriff Lamb.
Veronica uses the Taser, an action that will become familiar, on Felix, one of Weevil’s gang members.
“You want to know how I lost my virginity? So do I.” Someone handed Veronica a drink at a party that was roofied, though she doesn’t know who it was.
Veronica impersonates Inga from the Sheriff’s station, only to find out the person meeting Jake Kane at the Camelot was her mother.
Keith lies to Veronica about the license plates belonging to her mother, telling her that it was corporate espionage, and Veronica doesn’t say anything.
Weevil shows up at beach as Logan is vandalizing Veronica’s car. Weevil then smashes Logan’s friend’s car and tries to force Logan to apologize. He won’t and weevil punches him until Veronica says to let him because she doesn’t want his apology.
Veronica finds out that her father hasn’t stopped investigating the murder of Lily Kane.
The Camelot has no vacancy, representative of the corrupt values of Neptune.
Veronica is wearing a white dress to the party, and after she is raped, she picks up white underwear from the floor.
Veronica Vs. Logan – the War Between Mirror Images:
Logan asks Veronica to the beach, offering her “hooch,” saying her mother knew how to party. He asks her if she knows where her mother is, when he clearly knows she left town. We will later learn that Logan’s mother is an alcoholic.
Logan retaliates for the bong incident by smashing Veronica’s headlights.

“Why don’t you go see the wizard, ask for a little backbone.” – Sheriff Lamb
“This is my school. If you go here, your parents are either millionaires, or your parents’ work for millionaires. Neptune, California, a town without the middle class.” –Veronica
“Every school has an obligatory psychotic jackass. He’s ours.” – Veronica
“Well, let’s see it. I mean, if it’s as big as you say, I’ll be your girlfriend.” – Veronica
“Veronica, why does trouble follow you around?” – Clemmons
“Your Dad’s out tracking down bail jumpers half the time and yet somehow all the cases still get handled. How is that?” – Cliff
“I like this case. It’s tawdry.” – Cliff
“Veronica, when you go after Jake Kane, you take Back-up.” – Keith, right after Veronica promised not to pursue the Kane case, and before we know Back-up is the dog

“Tonight, we eat like the lower middle class to which we aspire.” – Keith
“I suddenly feel like I’m in a scene from the Outsiders.” – Wallace
