Chuck Rewatch Recap – Season 3
Episode 9 – Chuck Versus the Beard
Chuck himself, Zachary Levi, notably directed this episode!
“This all started about two and a half years ago, when I got an e-mail from Bryce Larkin…” – Chuck
The CIA has gotten intel that the Ring is planning to turn a CIA agent, but they don’t know which agent. They give Chuck a folder with a bunch of photos of possible agents. He doesn’t flash and Shaw points out that he hasn’t flashed in a week. As a result, he is pulled from the field.
Chuck gets called into Morgan’s office, where we learn that Hannah quit the Buy More. Morgan asks Chuck what’s going on and when he has no answer, Morgan fires Chuck as his best friend.
Since Chuck is out of the mission, Shaw takes his place. Sarah and Shaw pose as a married couple. While on the mission, Sarah is directed to the target, only to see that it’s Devon Woodcombe.
Meanwhile, some men have arrived at the Buy More because the owner is considering selling it. All employees are being interviewed. After Chuck leaves his interview, we see the two men in suits take out their Ring phones. They are both actually Ring agents looking for Agent Carmichael. They suspect Chuck is that agent. Oops! Good job, Shaw! (Though considering, maybe that shouldn’t be sarcastic?) The Ring agents decide to keep interviewing employees in case there are any other agents, but only suspect Morgan of having any importance, mainly because he’s Chuck’s best friend.
At the hotel, Sarah and Shaw pull Awesome aside when he gets up for drinks and tell him that they heard the Ring was trying to turn an agent staying at the hotel, and he’s the agent. Awesome starts freaking out, and he’s worried that he and Ellie may be in danger. Shaw can’t reassure him about that.
Casey breaks into the Ring agent’s room and sees a pre-recorded message is playing. He realizes the whole thing is a set-up. (We already got there – the Ring agents are at the Buy More!). After Casey calls Sarah, they tell Awesome it was all a false alarm.
Lester, in trying to find out about their jobs, spies on the Ring agents, and hears that everyone but Chuck and Morgan will be terminated, which everyone, Chuck included initially, assume means they will all be fired, not realizing that the potential store buyers are Ring agents.
After realizing that Castle is under attack and returning to the Buy More, Sarah, Casey and Shaw find themselves unable to get in with their security clearance. The Ring agents have locked them out.
One of the Ring agents tells the agent in charge that they have what they were looking for. The agent in charge orders him to kill Casey.
Shaw says Castle has a self-destruct program that is being put into effect. Sarah wants to give Chuck five more minutes because he’s still down there and he’ll die. Shaw doesn’t want to, but apparently he relents, because it doesn’t start.
After Chuck and Morgan escape, Shaw says Morgan will have to go into witness protection because he knows Chuck’s secret. Chuck points out that Awesome knows his secret. Casey’s response: “Cause Awesome’s awesome, Grimes is a moron.”
At the end, Awesome talks to Chuck because he’s still concerned about the Ring coming after him. Chuck reassures him that he and Ellie are safe. Awesome says okay, but as he turns around, we see he is still very much concerned. He goes inside and tells Ellie they need to get away. He then suddenly decides they should join Doctors Without Borders.
Shaw tells Sarah that the Ring never got to send the information from Castle to their superiors, so the operation is safe. However, he wonders why the Ring didn’t kill him when they had the chance. (We don’t).
Back at Castle, the Ring phone rings. Casey answers it and a voice replies, “Hello, Colonel Casey. It’s been a while.”
Morgan Learns the Truth:
While trying to help Jeff out, Morgan sees the Ring agents scanning the lockers. He then hears them say that they found the CIA base, which we call Castle. Not only does he hear them say that, he then sees them open the bank of lockers and go through the door to Castle. He follows them down the stairs and sees the immense hallways, more immense even than I think viewers realized.
Casey, Sarah and Shaw realize that Ring agents were really after Castle. Meanwhile, back at Castle, Morgan overhears the Ring agents say they are going to blow everything up. Then Morgan tells Chuck what he saw. Chuck is a little in shock that Morgan now knows the truth. Morgan suggests calling the police, and Chuck realizes that they have no cell phone reception. Morgan knowingly suggests that the bad guys would have cut off cell service. Morgan then says that they have to bring the fight to the bad guys. When Chuck is unable to convince him otherwise, he agrees to help under the condition that they get everyone else out of the store first. They go to evacuate everyone, only to find out that the rest of the employees have decided to stage a sit-in until they get their jobs back, so they have locked themselves in.
Chuck finally gets through to Sarah and tells her what is happening. They are on their way back, but Morgan has decided to be a hero and won’t wait. As he heads to Castle, two Ring agents come up behind them with guns. Chuck and Morgan end up tied up in Castle. The Ring agents keep asking about Agent Carmichael. Morgan thinks it’s weird that they keep thinking Chuck is Agent Carmichael.
Chuck tells the Ring agents that torturing won’t help, so they tell Chuck that they’re going to torture Morgan instead. Chuck tells Morgan the truth and he is in disbelief. Then a Ring agent says Colonel Casey and Agent Walker have arrived. Morgan is shocked to learn Sarah and Casey are spies, too.
After seeing how worried Morgan is about losing his job, Chuck uses his interview with the people thinking of buying the Buy More to tell them that Morgan is the best employee.
When Chuck and Morgan are tied up and Morgan is under threat of torture if Chuck doesn’t tell the Ring agents what they want to know, he looks so pained as he listens to Morgan talk about how Chuck has been his best friend since he was six, and Chuck feels terrible that his lying to Morgan has gotten him in this situation.
After Morgan learns the truth, Chuck is extremely apologetic, figuring Morgan is really mad at him for lying. Instead, Morgan is extremely excited that his best friend is a spy. Morgan also tells him that he’s rehired as his best friend.
Morgan knows that Chuck loves Sarah. When Chuck denies it, Morgan says Chuck isn’t that good of a liar. Even though he’s been lying to him for the last two and a half years, Morgan always knew he was lying, he just didn’t know what the lie was.
At Morgan’s prompting, Chuck is finally able to admit that he’s in love with Sarah. When the Ring agents come back in and say to kill them and dump the bodies, Chuck is able to flash again.
Shaw is about to call Langley to begin the self-destruction program in Castle. Sarah is horrified and then suddenly there is a noise and all three of them turn around, guns drawn, only to see Morgan walk out of Castle like he owns the place. “Bag ’em and tag ’em, Sarah,” Morgan says. “Excuse me. Agent Walker.” Then he actually WINKS. The facial expressions on Sarah and Casey’s faces are priceless.
Chuck’s speech about Morgan:
“We have 22 reasons why we can trust him. That’s the number of years that Morgan has been my best friend. And, yes, he has his faults, granted, but one thing he is, is loyal. And he will never betray me or my secret.” And then Sarah’s response: “He’s right.”
Sarah’s smile when Chuck and Morgan leave together. That is all.
Ring agents attack Casey. While they are fighting, Jeff walks in with chloroform. He jumps on the Ring agents back and knocks him out, all the while completely out of it himself.
Casey’s facial expression after Chuck tells Shaw that Morgan is staying. Again, that is all.
Coolest Action Sequences/Chuck Accidentally Saves the Day:
When they are about to be killed, Chuck flashes and is able to take out all the bad guys. As he’s about to take out the last one, Morgan hits him over the back of the head.
Gratuitous Shirtless Scene:
Awesome is shirtless next to the pool at the hotel he is staying at with Ellie. This one isn’t gratuitous, since what else would you wear to the pool, but figured a shirtless Awesome moment is always worth mentioning.

Brandon Routh is back as Shaw.

Episode Rating: Four stars (out of a possible four stars) – This episode belongs to Chuck and Morgan and it is highly entertaining and a nice break from the horrible love quadrangle that we’re still not quite through. All the scenes with Chuck and Morgan are emotional and moving and demonstrate their commitment to each other as lifelong best friends.
