Neil Patrick Harris & his longtime partner, David Burtka, got married in Italy over the weekend. They announced their engagement in June 2011 after the Marriage Equality Act was passed in New York. Neil Patrick Harris posted about the wedding on his Twitter account, writing, “Guess what? @David Burtka and I got married over the weekend. Yup, we put the ‘n’ and ‘d’ in ‘husband.'”
Details about the wedding were released via the couple’s friend Kelly Ripa, who attended the wedding and discussed it on her morning talk show, Live With Kelly & Michael.
“I spent the weekend it Italy,” Ripa said. “I went to a destination wedding, the wedding of Neil Patrick Harris and his partner, David Burtka. They got married. Yes, breaking news!” Ripa went on to discuss the wedding, which she called very quiet and private. “It was a beautiful, beautiful family affair in Perugia, Italy. They rented a castle, or, I think they rented it. I hope we didn’t break into a castle!” Ripa joked. “It was really beautiful. Sir Elton John performed. There were fireworks. The food was amazing. There were magic tricks, because you know, Neil is way into magic. Their wedding vows were so beautiful. It was a beautiful wedding. The speeches were very moving. They are such a nice family. They are such a beautiful family.”
Ripa also told a story about the couple’s son, Gideon, 3, who was going to be the ring bearer. Apparently, Gideon didn’t want to be the ring bearer and instead wanted to be the orange boy, so during the ceremony, as Ripa described, “He passed out oranges to everybody as he came down the aisle. He came up with it on his own. He had his little tux and his top hat and he was passing out oranges. Later on during the night, we were dancing and I said to him, ‘Look, Gideon, I saved your orange because I’m going to keep it forever,’ and he goes, ‘Oh, you shouldn’t! It’s so delicious!'”
Ripa also recounted a speech given by Elton John and his partner, David Furnish. According to Ripa, “They got up and said, you know, many, many years ago, this would not be possible. We’re so thankful and grateful to everybody for supporting us and our families, and how our children have each other to sort of look to each other as another example of a family like ours and how the definition of a family is changing, always.”
Ripa ended her recount of the wedding by saying, “I was so happy for them.”
A spokesman for Harris and Burtka released a statement to People confirming the marriage: “We happily confirm that Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka were married in Italy in an intimate ceremony surrounded by their close friends and family.”
