Season 1 Episode 2
The episode picks up after the events of the pilot, with Sam putting flowers at Jess’ grave. He then wakes up suddenly and it turns out he was asleep and having a nightmare.
Sam and Dean show up to join the search and rescue for a missing person, Tommy, and they aren’t really welcomed with open arms.
Sam realizes the creature is a Wendigo. Dean tells them that the creature is a great hunter during the day, but an even better one at night.
Sam tells Dean he doesn’t think their father was there and Dean agrees. Sam wants to leave but Dean says he thinks their father wants them to use his journal to continue the family business.
After one member of the search party, Roy, goes missing, the Wendigo leads them all into a trap, where they find Roy with a broken neck.
The Wendigo takes Dean and Hayley, one of the stranded people, and Dean uses M&Ms to leave a trail. Sam and the boy with them follow and find the cave where they have both been hung up by the Wendigo. Hayley also finds her brother, who is still alive. They also find flare guns in the lair, so Dean goes off to draw the attention of the Wendigo while Sam, Hayley, Tommy and the boy escape. It doesn’t work and the Wendigo comes after Sam. Dean is able to come up behind it and shoot it, killing it.
When the woman says Dean didn’t pack provisions, he’s like, “What do you mean I didn’t pack provisions?” and pulls out a bag of peanut M&Ms.
Ghost Story of the Week:
A Wendigo is kidnapping and killing people in the woods of Black Ridge in Colorado. The brothers find that people go missing in the woods every 23 years, like clockwork. Wendigos begin as men that usually become cannibals to survive, the Donner party being cited as an example.
Dean’s Family Moments:
Dean is worried about Sam and offers to let him drive for a while, something that Dean apparently never does.
Sam has an anti-family moment when he says that they have to stop the girl who is looking for her missing brother from going into the woods, and Dean says they aren’t going to be able to stop her, so they will go with her and protect her while they look for the creature. Sam is mad that looking for their father isn’t enough and that “now we’ve got to baby-sit too.”
When they discuss using the journal and looking for their father, Sam only wants to think about finding their father and Jessica’s killer, but Dean is determined to follow out their father’s orders to keep hunting things and protecting people. The brothers have a nice bonding moment.
The episode ends with Dean reassuring Sam that they’re going to find their father. Sam says in the meantime, he’s driving, and Dean gives him the keys.
Cory Monteith, of Glee, shows up in the beginning of the episode as one of the campers to get eaten.
